The Heartburn Problem

hb_fig1 Normally when a person eats, the food goes through a connecting food pipe in to an abdominal organ called STOMACH. There is a gate keeper mechanism that stops the food coming back up the food pipe.

The GATE KEEPER MECHANISM consists of a thickening of the muscle of the lower esophagus and action of the diaphragm. The gate keeper mechanism is necessary as the pressure in side of the stomach is higher then the pressure in side the food pipe esophagus.
hb_fig2 When the GATE KEEPER MECHANISM is not working normally the food and the acid produced by the stomach comes up in to the food pipe. Large population studies have revealed that about 40 – 45 % of the American population suffers from acid reflux time to time. About 10% of the population has severe acid reflux producing daily or very frequent heart burn. These people may or may not have hiatal hernia with malfunctioning of the diaphragm and malfunction of the lower esophageal sphincter allowing the stomach hydrochloric acid to rise in the chest portion of the esophagus.
Abnormal frequency of the acid coming up in the esophagus produces damage to the esophagus. This may lead to stricture and in some cases cancer of esophagus. To me the bigger problem is the acid going up to mouth and the breathing passages producing acid damage to the voice box, sinusitis, sore throat, bronchitis and even asthma attacks and damage to the teeth and bad breath.
