What does Antireflux
Surgery do? The main structural defect in
patients with acid reflux is that the Lower Esophageal
Sphincter (LES) or valve is not working. Normally the LES
should work as a Gate Keeper. It should open when food wants
to come down and close when the food and acid want to go
back up.
The Anti
Reflux surgery recreates the LES by 360 degree stomach wrap
around the lower esophagus. The diaphragmatic hernia is also
repaired. Please see photos below.
How acid and food
is stopped from coming back up to mouth? As the stomach
distends with food and acid, the new valve also distends and
it pinches off the junction with esophagus and food and acid
is stopped from going back up.
Will I be
able to eat after this procedure? Yes for a few weeks
after procedure we recommend that our patients stay on
liquid diet as there is some post operative swelling. After
that you can gradually increase your food intake. It is best
to eat small meals and avoid carbonated sodas.
Will
I need to take my PPI medications after this procedure? You
may need to slowly reduce your medication dose to taper it
over a period of a few weeks other wise you may experience
withdrawal symptoms. After you are off medications you do
not need them.
