LAPAROSCOPIC CHOLECYSTECTOMY
-© 2007 Gaurang S. Pandya, MD

Traditional open Cholecystectomy remained a Gold standard for management of gallstone disease for many decades. In 1988 French surgeons successfully performed Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy. Eddy Joe Reddick and Douglas Olsen of Nashville TN popularized the procedure in USA. In past 12 years Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy has become Gold standard for management of the gallstone disease.

What is Cholecystectomy?

Cholecystectomy means surgical removal of the gallbladder.

How the open Cholecystectomy is done?

A 6 to 9 inch long incision is made in the abdominal wall below the rib cage. The abdominal cavity is opened and the gallbladder is removed. The incision is sutured back and procedure is completed.

How the Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy is done?

With a special needle Carbon Dioxide gas is used to insufflate (inflate) the abdominal cavity. Three or four 1/2-inch incisions are made and special instruments are inserted in the abdominal cavity along with a fiberoptic video camera. The gallbladder is removed through the umbilicus.

What are the advantages of Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy?

There is no need for more then 1-day hospitalization as compared to 4 to 7 days for open procedure. It takes less time to recover, there is much less pain and patients return to work sooner, one week compared to 4 to 6 weeks for open procedure.
